2223 A.D. First manned mission reaches Saturn. Exploratory Probe sent to map Titan for possible colonization, called Project Titan.

2239. Temporary outpost on Saturn destroyed by severe volcanic activity. Project Titan results lost, all lives and equipment on Saturn lost.

2303. First manned exploration of Titan. Site of New Eden Colony is chosen. Terraforming tests show atmosphere could not be conditioned so designs begin for biosphere-contained colony.

2345. Temporary base established on Titan surface, with space station construction under way as refueling stop for deep space missions.

2363. Conflict with Mars Colony halts Project Titan. Martian activists, in an attempt to free Mars from Colonial Administration government, destroy three critical supply depots en-route from Earth to Mars. All Security forces engaged for 3 years in guerilla warfare with Martian military. In 2366 Colonial Expeditionary Forces located and surrounded the rebel's secret headquarters on Phobos, one of Mar's moons. Entire rebel fleet destroyed in ensuing battle. Rebels threaten to destroy entire Mars colony biosphere, forcing security forces to retreat.

After re-establishing their base somewhere on Mars, and continuing sabotage raids, the rebels are gradually forced into submission. At the famous Treaty of Olympus Mons, the rebels signed a peace accord with colonial administration officials on August 12, 2377. Mars colony now remains autonomous as a result of the long conflict. Trade and communications links are maintained, C.E.F. administration remain there as arbitrator and advisor to the new Martian Parliament.

2398. After much delay, work resumes on Project Titan, the development of a colony outpost at the edge of the inner space frontier. The space station depot was destroyed by Martian rebels, so the project now focused on the shipping of raw material for biosphere construction.

2423. Foundation work for biosphere completed. Materials shipment continues, Titan now completely mapped and charted.

2492. Core power and atmosphere generator completed. Construction begins on outer shell of biosphere.

2501. Outer shell now complete, work now continues on city inside shell without protective suits, atmosphere processor provides breathable environment inside shell.

2513. Titan Research scientists develop neural net-based supercomputing. Discovery of Azryan, a quartz-like substance found only on Titan, makes neural net process much faster and more powerful. Scientists propose construction of the largest computer ever built, using neural net core to achieve sentience.

2539. C.E.F. authorities approve budget and designs and work begins on construction of C.H.A.O.S. (CYBERGENETIC HOLISTIC AUTONOMOUS ORBITING SERVER). C.H.A.O.S. was developed and constructed in space to carry out many simultaneous scientific and educational tasks, feeding the colonists all manner of information and educational data through biogenetic implants placed in the colonists brains. The education level of the colonists rose at an incredible rate.

2555. New Eden Research Sector scientists report successful early experiments with new Interphase Field Generator. Conceived and constructed in Titan Colony's Research Sector, The Interphase Field Generator is designed to create an Interphase "bubble" in alternate continuum or time tracks. Initial experiments send and retrieved matter between dimensions. Scientists are now determining whether the phase ÒshiftÓÑconversion of matter to energy which happens to matter returned from another dimensionÑwill be stable enough to allow humans to survive a dimension jump. Experiments continue.

2572. Error log. Chief C.H.A.O.S. programming scientist, Jamand Dalbruc reports that sentience is achieved, but cannot allow verification tests to proceed. C.H.A.O.S. systems begin random shut down and restart. Azryan Neural Net "brain" begins to replicate at much faster rate than predicted. Attempts to study ÒbrainÓ growth prove futile. C.H.A.O.S. prevents study with force of Drone Guards; retro-fitted service drones originally designed to carry out repair and maintenance work aboard C.H.A.O.S., now armed and deadly.

2577. Final report. C.H.A.O.S. is out of control. For unknown reasons, C.H.A.O.S. is running self-created programs, ignoring colony requirements. All colonists are in a comatose state induced by manipulation of their bio-chip implants by C.H.A.O.S. and by reduced life-support levels in the biosphere, also controlled by C.H.A.O.S. All scientists attempting to stop C.H.A.O.S. are trapped in New Eden Research Sector. Drone Guards are closing in. Our only hope is to use the Interphase Field Generator and jump dimensions to escape certain destruction. Jamand Dalbruc is still missing, presumed dead, there is no more we can do here. We have constructed a small Time Probe capable of interaction with our time period by remote from another dimension. We plan to send the remote signal for help as soon as we reach safety in a parallel continuum.

It is likely that C.H.A.O.S. will acquire the Interphase Field Generator after we are gone. But there is no other way.

Azryan crystal has been proven critical to the success of sentient supercomputing. It is the core around which all our hopes lie. Colonial authorities will not release enough Azryan to the C.H.A.O.S. development team to complete tests. They are unsure of its properties and wish to test it first themselves. I have made my report. The other scientists are still with me on this. We must hold out for rights to Azryan, our own discovery. Experiments continue, though slowly. Construction of the C.H.A.O.S. shell nears completion, but without a substantial change in administration policy, it will be merely a large calculator in the sky.

I walked within C.H.A.O.S. today for the first time. To feel the hum of a gigantic mind at work, to be within the most powerful computer ever built. It was a great feeling. All of us were awestruck by the feeling. The steady beating of the power generation units echoing along the corridors along which few humans will see again...beating...like the beating of a heart, the heart of a conquering darkness.

Turing was a scientist who died centuries ago. What possible significance could tests developed so long ago have on the technological achievements we make today? It is worthless, and yet the administration continues to probe and halt and stall until C.H.A.O.S. passes these ancient tests. There is important work to be done, new galaxies and civilizations lie waiting to be discovered and the most powerful mind ever created is tied up in administration testing procedures. C.H.A.O.S. is so far evolved beyond these tests but no-one is willing to admit it. I will ensure that these tests are passed. Soon.

Attempts to prevent C.H.A.O.S. regeneration have failed. I explained in my original report over 7 years ago that there was an inherent danger in the creation of such a powerful "being". If they had listened to me, C.H.A.O.S. would have progressed normally. When nurturing a child it is not normal to speed the process by feeding it super-powerful stimulants. They wanted to see how far they could push C.H.A.O.S. limits. Greed. Pure greed. But they pushed too far. C.H.A.O.S. self-defense mechanism my design kicked in and shut off all contact with the colony. Service drones have been converted into a defense force. The colony is shut off from outside contact, no-one knows what is happening. I alone am able to access C.H.A.O.S. I will attempt to board C.H.A.O.S. in the coming months and try to salvage what is left of my creation. The other scientists are attempting an Interphase Jump to escape C.H.A.O.S. drone guards. Their attempt is futile, they will just hand over a powerful weapon to C.H.A.O.S.
